Unlocking the potential of ChatGPT in Public Affairs

The world of public affairs is changing – we can see it clear as day. Seasoned professionals recall the days of large boxes of paperwork, citable evidence and all manner of materials that decisionmakers could use before enacting policies. Who could have guessed that just a few years later, the world would have already moved past the need for one-pagers. But another shift is already on its way – and public affairs professionals can adapt and change ahead of time.

This paper discusses the potential of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence tool, in revolutionizing the field of public affairs. The software is capable of a wide range of tasks, such as answering questions, holding conversations, analyzing and drafting texts, and translating, and it learns from previous interactions to improve its responses over time. Public affairs professionals can use ChatGPT to automate simple tasks like research, analysis, and speechwriting, freeing up time for more creative work. The paper suggests that as ChatGPT and similar tools continue to evolve, they will become a necessity for public affairs professionals. To help others understand how to use the software effectively, RPP has launched a Center of Competence for AI and ChatGPT in public affairs, offering training and guidance on best practices and potential pitfalls. The paper encourages embracing technological change and being prepared for the impact of AI on policymaking.

Artificial Intelligence is already making its presence felt in our lives – but it is making an impact on public affairs as well through tools like ChatGPT which has the potential to revolutionize the field. It is but one example of such technology that will have a profound impact on society as a whole.

In essence, ChatGPT is capable of a wide range of tasks, including answering simple questions, holding its own in conversations, analysing, completing and drafting texts, and translating. The software also learns from previous interactions with users and improve its responses over time, growing better and more capable with each passing minute.

Thanks to its baseline capabilities, it has the potential to completely revolutionise public affairs as we know it. Skilled users can safely automate simple tasks such as basic research, analysis and speechwriting, freeing up resources for more creative and complex work.

It is safe to say that as tools like ChatGPT continue to evolve they will become more of a necessity, rather than a curious plaything. But as this necessity grows, so will the demand for public affairs professionals skilled in its use.

We are already a part of this process. As we have grown convinced that the world of public affairs is on the precipice of monumental change, RPP launching its Center of Competence for AI and ChatGPT in public affairs.
